Those plucking blackberries may be far better off than those attempting to find some universal divine purpose, no? In fact, I wonder if they are the ones truly experiencing God rather than the shoe-taker-off.

Are the people in the poem taking off their shoes attempting to find some universal divine purpose? Or are they just recognizing the divine—recognizing that they are on holy ground?

This is all there is to the poem, as far as I know. Maybe those who take off their shoes will also pluck blackberries. But they’ll be aware that they’re feasting with God.
