Jesus loves me

Karl Barth, one of the 20th century’s greatest and most important theologians, said this to sum up his massive 14-volume Church Dogmatics: “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”

That tells you a great deal about his theology (countering my dad’s opinion of him as a “liberal” in the pejorative sense), and it takes up a whole lot less shelf space.

I really don’t understand how KB could be viewed in any sense as a liberal. He’s no fundamentalist, true, but there are other options.

By the way, I wonder if that story is an apocryphal one or if it actually happened…

If you’re a fundamentalist, I presume he could be viewed as a liberal. It’s all relative.

Though it doesn’t guarantee its validity, I’ve heard that story in several places.

I know little of KB other than what you’ve posted here, but those *selected excerpts* have certainly had a liberal flavour to them. It’s probably safer to say that he’s no fundamentalist, and Andrew does, than that he’s a liberal: probably middle of the traditional road.
